Description
Spray Dryer
Single step drying process in which various solutions, free-flowing slurries, emulsions, dispersions etc. are directly converted to powder/granules. This is the preferred method of drying of many thermally-sensitive materials such as foods and pharmaceuticals or materials which may require extremely consistent, fine, particle size.
As a standard hot air is drying medium however if the liquid is a flammable solvent such as ethanol or the product is oxygen-sensitive then nitrogen is used
Dryer basically uses 3 types of atomizer i.e., rotary disc type, single-fluid high pressure swirl nozzle type & two fluid or ultrasonic type to disperse the liquid or slurry into a controlled drop size fine spray. This provides broader particle size distribution.
From the top of dryer hot air/gas is blown through FD Fan in the same direction as the sprayed liquid (co-current action) & fine powder is produced which is further collected in Cyclone separators and exhaust gases exit system through ID Fan. Co-current flow generally allows the system to operate more efficiently.
